Want a colour laser that won't break the bank? The two top-contenders for best machine under $500 are the Fuji Xerox C1110 (A Model, the B model comes with 1/2 toner and far less features) and the Hewlett Packard HP1600. In this review we're going to put them head to head and find out which one comes out on top.

Speed

For a colour laser with a price-tag south of $500, the HP1600 delivers a respectable 8 pages per minute. However, the Xerox C1110 clearly dominates with an astounding 16 pages per minute (mono) and 12 pages per minute (colour). The Xerox also has a much quicker first-page-out speed with only 9 sec (mono) and 12 sec (colour), versus the HP's 20 seconds.

Image Quality

Both printers feature an optical resolution of 600 x 600 dpi. The Xerox has a much higher maximum DPI. While there are no major differences in terms of actual image quality, the Xerox C1110 features a number of languages (such as Adobe Post Script) and more memory (upgradable) to better facilitate the printing of image-heavy documents and Photoshop files.

Features

In addition to the PDL languages (PCL6, PCL5, Adobe PostScript 3, HBPL, FX-PDF) and larger memory of the Xerox C1110 (128mb standard versus the HP's 16mb) the C1110 also features a network card (Ethernet 100Base-TX/10Base-T). The HP1600 does not support networking.

Compatibility and Duty Cycle

The Xerox C1110 includes drivers for both Mac and PC users. The HP1600 includes Windows drivers but is not compatible with Macintosh systems.

The Xerox C1110 also delivers in terms of durability, boasting a 40,000 page monthly duty cycle – that's twice as many prints per month as the HP1600 with a duty cycle of 20,000 pages.
