Looking at an A3 mono laser printer for your office? The two top-contenders for best machine around the 2K mark are the Fuji Xerox C3055DX and the Hewlett Packard Laserjet 5200N.
In this review we're going to put them head to head and find out which one comes out on top.
Speed
For a laser printer with a price-tag around 2K, the HP 5200N delivers a respectable 35 pages per minute. The Xerox C3055DX also does 35 pages per minute (mono) however this can produce colour pages at 8 pages per minute (colour).
In terms of first-page-out speed both units are very good with 11 seconds.
Image Quality
Both machines have a very high DPI, but the fact that the Xerox can produce colour at 9600DPI which sets it apart.
Features
Both the HP and the Xerox have a few printer languages (PCL6, PCL5, Adobe PostScript 3, HBPL, FX-PDF) which will cover all print job.
The Xerox can hold more paper with a 150 manual sheet feeder compared to a 100 manual sheet feeder for the HP.
Also in terms of running costs the Xerox is much better.

Summary
While both printers are equally matched in terms of price and quality. The Xerox however offers lower running costs and is able to print out colour as well as mono. This is a great soltion for consumers that are maily printing out mono but need a little colour from time to time for their letter heads and graphs etc.
The Xerox comes standard with a 1 year on-site warranty but with the HP you will have to send the printer to the repair centre. This and the lower cost per page is why Xerox C3055DX stands out as the only smart choice for consumers.

Solid ink prints very high quality even on normal paper (unlike most ink jet printers) the running costs are comparable to laser printers (often cheaper per page because of less consumable parts). Phasers (solid ink) are also more environmentally friendly as there are no toner cartridges and no toner particles in the are that have been of concern |review| solid ink printers can handle the thickest paper in the class. Phasers are often used for wedding stationary etc. Because less heat is used with solid ink the printers don't tend to scrunch up envelopes like some laser printers.
