A3 Scanners start with home/small business models (i.e. ScanExpress A3) that are not as fast or well built as the heavy duty scanners. They are very popular because of the price and do a great job for the occasional scan, if you were scanning all day you'd soon wish you'd spent a little more as time is money.
The choice for A3 is Microtek http://www.microtek.com.au/ (9800XL is A3) |brochure| they have been making scanners for a very long time (made scanners for Agfa too) Microtek have won many awards. They are much more solid and faster than a basic A3 scanner, you can also add a Transparency adaptor (lid with moving light) for film & X-Ray etc. In 2010 the new model is the 1600XL A3, this scanner is build for speed and ideal for documents and general imaging.
The A3 Microtek 1000XL is the flagship with a dynamic range of 4.0 which means is does a great job on all film as well as reflective (photos etc.) this combined with "Digital Ice" allows the scanner to repair damaged film |brochure|

When we reviewed the Twain Scanner A3 below someone asked us what TWAIN stands for, well believe it or not Technology Without An Important Name!
TWAIN is a standard for letting the scanner talk to the software without the software needing to know how the scanner scans, just that it will do the job. In Photoshop for example you select the "TWAIN Source" to start scanning.
The Twain Scanner A3 is slower than the more expensive models so if you're scanning hundreds of pages per week it's not for you. If you scan a plan now and then it's a smart choice. Most people will scan at 150 to 300 DPI for an A3 colour page as 300DPI = 100MB uncompressed file!
Every time you double the DPI you quadruple the file size.
Think of it as a home scanner on steroids, not a pro-graphics or pre-press A3 scanner like the Microtek 9X00 series.
The new ScanMaker 9800XL is Microtek´s newest member of the A3 scanner family and builds on the success of the ScanMaker 9600XL with greatly improved specifications and connectivity.
The large 17 x 12 scanning area combines with a very high 1600 x 3200dpi resolution to cover almost all reflective scanning requirements.
The improved optional transparency adaptor now offers a very large 16 x 12 scan area and the maximum density of 3.7D captures huge amounts of subtle highlight and shadow details, with accurate colour values. The transparency adaptor option also includes a set of film templates for 35mm slides, 35mm strips, medium format film and 5 x 4 film. Extra holders can be purchased too making this the perfect scanner for producing large contact sheets with the ability to deliver high quality final scans too.
To cover almost all connectivity requirements, three interface options are included as standard, FireWire, SCSI-2 and USB.
A PCI FireWire card for Windows and cable, plus a USB cable are also included. Windows NT users can also use this scanner with the addition of a SCSI card and cable.

Reviews
The top A3 scanner is the capable Microtek SM 9800XL
The ScanMaker 9800XL offers an excellent combination of versatility and quality.
Extremely good flatbed scanner that’s built to last and produces scans that are top notch. Excellent for entry level pre-press use.
It was virtually impossible to produce a scan that we were unhappy with from a subjective point of view, which is just about as fine a sub pre-press recommendation as you can get without being picky.
